From Don:
April saw Don flying two weekends. The first weekend he flew Covenant Youth of Alaska (CYAK) to their Spring Blast in Mountain Village. We started by picking up the leaders from Anchorage and taking them to Mountain Village. We left not being sure that the weather would let us land. On our way out the weather started to go down not up as forecasted. Just after we passed Aniak it went too low for us to land so we turned around and landed in Aniak. After getting fuel, we checked and the weather had improved so we proceeded arriving about an hour later than planned. From there we flew to bring people in from Unalakleet, Hooper Bay and Scammon Bay. The group leader was Cheryl Johnson who we knew from ACC the previous year. Over half the leaders were native teenagers, a first. The teenage leaders presented several events for the 25 junior high youth we brought in and the 25 youth from the village. They would play basketball first and then led discussions bringing Christ into their lives. In one activity three of the leaders answered questions the youth had written – some of them were really hard. Bob & Don stayed with Covenant pastor Carl Ellwood and his wife Marcia who teaches at the school. Unfortunately the man in charge of the water pump for the village was gone for a couple of weeks and the town water pump went on the frits. As a result the Ellwoods had little to no water pressure. Oh well three days without a shower didn’t kill me.

The second weekend we flew Moravian Youth of Alaska (MYAK) to a Singspiration in Quinhagak. They use song, worship and testimonies to inspire the junior high youth. We had the King Air and the Caravan flying youth into Quinhagak. Bob & Don flew 111 youth (9 at a time) in from Anchorage, Atmautluk (3 loads), Kwethluk (3 loads), Tulusak (2 loads), Dillingham and Manakotak (3 loads), over three days. Meanwhile Mark flew 95 youth in from Anchorage, Tuntuliak, Nunapichuk (2 loads), Togiak, Kwigillingok (3 loads), Kongiginak (3 loads) and Tuluksak. On Thursday the weather was great, allowing us to fly from 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM. On Friday the weather came down during the afternoon so that we had to dodge snow showers on the last three runs. Because we had to fly an instrument approach on one of these legs it took us twice as long (1 hour versus half an hour). This resulted in us having to fly the last two loads in on Saturday when the weather was much better. During those 14.5 hours we flew for 8 hours – the rest was loading, unloading and getting gas. MARC flew in 206 youth with commercial airlines bringing in an estimated 50 youth. That’s a total of 256 bodies into a 300 person village. Now you know why we stayed in Bethel!!!

Quite often we eat one meal on the airplane. Normally it's lunches we bring with us. Sometimes we are given box lunches by the groups we are flying around. the delicacies we receive.
